NOSTOS V
Unique Work
45,5 x 60,5cm
Silver gelatin darkroom handprint on washi paper, mounted on wood board
The word ‘Nostos’ is a theme in Homeric epic literature that translates as ‘homecoming’ or ‘return by sea’. It’s here we trace the root of the English word nostalgia.
In the hands of London- and Athens-based photographer and writer Elise Wouters, the Nostos series drenches the power of return in solitary sensuality, focusing in on memory and self-expression as physical trinkets pulled from the jetsam of having dared to venture out at all.
These one of a kind photographic artworks were each created as part of the HOS artist residency at Mona from washi paper handprints mounted on bleach white planks reminiscent of dockhouses and shipwrecks. They depict a world cut out from the fabric of time.
Elise Wouters is a Belgian photographer and writer based in between London and Athens. Her work examines the poetics of place, solitude, memory and self-representation. Through her darkroom handprinting, she explores the physicality of photography, resulting in unique pieces that carry traces of their journey.
Lorem ipsum, or lipsum as it is sometimes known, is dummy text used in laying out print, graphic or web designs. The passage is attributed to an unknown typesetter in the 15th century who is thought to have scrambled parts of Cicero’s De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum for use in a type specimen book.
