MARE INSULARUM
In the moon’s pale fire we see rocky oceans, islands of porcelain stone. This Mare Insularum (the lunar ‘sea of islands’) is brought back down to Earth in Athens-based artist Angeliki Stamatakou’s ceramic series of the same name.
Each piece is a handmade work of art, appearing in a variety of lunar tones and integrating masterful techniques and high-quality materials such as platinum.
Developed and on display specifically for Mona’s room 16, this set of five uniquely textured decorative arrangements reflects the artist’s fascination with the sea in all its variation and possibility.
Angeliki Stamatakou is a ceramic sculptor based in Athens, Greece. In her series of works, large clay sculptures serve as pure evocative artworks as well as functional pieces such as vases and candleholders, blurring the lines between utility and art.
