UNTITLED
This untitled sculpture has the symmetry of a mask. A thin half-circle arcs like a crown around a matte-black ampule-shaped vase. Geometric shapes punctuate the curve and two circles loom like staring eyes.
Yiorgos Trichas is deliberate. Subtle variations evoke the artist’s hand, contrasting solidity and the silence implicit in negative space.
On a tabletop or pedestal, the shape casts precise yet shifting shadows like through the slats of an ornamental window shutter.
Yiorgos Trichas’ (b. 1982, Athens, Greece) journey starts in Syros where he was brought up.
Syros offered him a unique sense of freedom and a deep appreciation of art as an essential part of the quotidian. It is the memory of that place that brings him back to his raw state; it reminds him of who he is and who he wants to be.
It is there that he draws his inspiration from; the Cycladic light streaming in through the shutters, the smell of bare earth, the pastel hues, the neoclassical architecture.
As a speech therapist, Trichas gets daily reminders that in life, there is plenty of room to change and reshape, once you bring something back to its unprocessed, unrefined state and resculpt it.
The making of ceramics is no different; the creator imagines, handles, manipulates, sculpts, withdraws and ponders the result.
Lorem ipsum, or lipsum as it is sometimes known, is dummy text used in laying out print, graphic or web designs. The passage is attributed to an unknown typesetter in the 15th century who is thought to have scrambled parts of Cicero’s De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum for use in a type specimen book.
