The photocollage, Aubade I, presents two quiet scenes: on the left, a woman sits at the beach, turned away from the viewer, her outline a fading silhouette; on the right, a woman reclines, draped in silk, her body both revealed and withheld. Folded paper, thin as chiffon, overlaid onto the whole unites and obscures the composition.
Created as part of Elise Wouters' HOS residency at Mona, this signed monochromatic print turns layers into texture and atmosphere, as if giving us a glimpse over the shoulder into the artist's diary.
Elise Wouters is a Belgian photographer and writer based in between London and Athens. Her work examines the poetics of place, solitude, memory and self-representation. Through her darkroom handprinting, she explores the physicality of photography, resulting in unique pieces that carry traces of their journey.
